2 July 2016, Nirapad News: Hostage crisis took place at a Spanish restaurant, Holey Artisan Bakery, in Road No. 79 in the diplomatic zone of Gulshan 2 last night the 1 July. In the crisis at total of 28 people were killed of which there were 20 hostages, 2 police men and 6 terrorists. 13 people were rescued of whom 3 were foreigners. 20 of the hostages were all brutally murdered before midnight last night.

Brigadier General Nayeem Ashfaq Chowdhury gave the following statement during the ISPR press release in relation to the hostage crisis in Gulshan last night:

Hostage situation arose at 8:45PM last night. Terrorists entered the restaurant firing and took people on the restaurant hostage. Police readily reached the place of crisis and took control of the situation. They cordoned the area and obstructed the terrorists further operations. The bravery, sincerity and professionalism with which the BGB, police and RAB tackled the situation is truly remarkable. In the process two police officers have been killed and over twenty injured.

Army was ordered to take control of the critical situation by the Honorable premier of the country. Accordingly the army conducted operation “Thunderbolt”. The army have been collecting detailed information since last night from the detectives and police forces who were present at the place of crisis.

Under the command of the Army, the Navy, Air Force, BGB, police and RAB jointly conducted operation “Thunderbolt”. Commando operation started at 7:40AM in the morning under the command of Bangladesh Army air commando. It lasted for about twelve to thirteen minutes, within which time the terrorists were eradicated at the target area and the situation was brought under control. The operation was finally concluded successfully at 8:30AM in the morning after further activities were completed.

In course of the operation a total of 13 people were successfully rescued alive of which 3 were foreigners- 1 Japanese, 2 Sri Lankan. Through the raid out of 7 terrorists 6 were killed and 1 suspected terrorist was captured. Through the search that was conducted at the end of the raid, 20 dead bodies of hostages were recovered who were all killed last night and majority were brutally murdered by sharp weapons. Maintaining protocol post-mortem autopsy will be performed on all the dead bodies at Combined Military Hospital (CMH).

Primarily terrorist used pistol, folded butt, AK-22 rifle, intact IEDs, walkie talkie sets and many local sharp weapons were recovered from the scene.

In the final raid no one was injured or killed. Other than that Navy, Air Force, BB, police, RAB, fires service and detective personnel promptly and bravely participated in the operation – the Brigadier conveyed his thanks and appreciation towards them.
